Castle Artists
When we think of castles
we think of big, old secluded palaces sometimes remote, sometimes
eerie. Castles were popular subjects for artists in the 17th century
and even earlier. Here are some artists who have given us great pictures
of castles.
J
M W Turner created the pictures he called "Dartmouth Castle,"
and "Caernarvon Castle."
He was born in 1775 and died in 1851, in the English Romantic period.
He was known as a landscape artist. Some called him "The painter
of light." He loved to paint castles. A Londoner born and bred
he attended the Royal Academy School of Art. He studied the science
of light and color. He was considered unique in the art community,
and opened the way for modern painting.
Johannes
Kip was born in 1653 and died in 1722. A draughtsman and engraver
he did portraits, views and book illustrations. His pictures gave
a birds eye view of English country seats. Archeologically significant
for the information they gave in the period of British architecture
of landscape and design. One of the pictures of castles he gave
us is the "Windsor Castle."
Albrecht
Duerer created the "Innsbreuk Castle."In 1486 to 1489
he studied as an apprentice in the workshop of the painter Michael
Wolgemet where he learned painting, wood and copper engraving. Becoming
a talented artist and engraver many of his works are devoted to
the mathematical aspects of art. He was considered to be in the
higher social standings of artists because many important people
commissioned him to do series of drawings for them. Some of these
people were Christian the Second of Denmark, The emperor Maximillion
the First of Austria.
