Demon Artists
In
the world of demons only one name needs
to be mentioned. Clive Barker.
Clive Barker was
born near Penny Lanes, Liverpool in 1952. He entered Liverpool University
to study English Literature and Philosophy. At twenty-one he moved
to London and set up a theater company to perform the plays that
he was creating at the time. Some of his literary work include;
History of the Devil, Frankenstein in Love and a few others. He
turned to short fiction in his late twenties. He began to find an
audience. Soon enough he was getting so big many of his books were
finding their ways into translation and now appear in many different
languages.
In
1987 he decided to direct something himself. The result was Hellraiser
which spun off into the making of comic books and three movie sequels,
Hellraiser 2, Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth and Hellbound Hellraiser
4. He wrote a children's fable called The Thief of Always. His most
recent film project was Lord of Illusions, which he wrote, directed
and co-produced. Although Clive Barker has been a part of so many
wonderful experiences through his art his first love remains books.
His literary influences include the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Ray
Bradbury, Herman Melville, William Blake, Will Burroughs, Arthur
Machen and both the old and new testaments.
Clive
Barker was quoted as saying, "I've
pointed out many times that we spend one-third
of our lives asleep. During the adventure
of dreaming, we are making both private
investigations into our hopes and fears
and also swimming into the dream pool,
which we share with the rest of our species.
I hope that the fiction I write will empower
us to both comprehend our secret dream
selves and understand the profound intimacy
we share with every other human being."
