Fairy Artists
When
we think of fairies we think of innocence, goodness, and children
because after all it is in the imagination of children where they
reside.
Cicely
Mary Barker born in England in 1895 was struck with epilepsy
as a child. She began to dream of fairies and a great career started.
Her pictures of fairies are beautiful and are well known throughout
the world. Some books by Mary Barker include flower fairies of the
summer and flower fairies of the seasons.
Arthur Rackham
was born in London in 1867. He was one of the most prolific illustrators
of the twentieth century. Published at 17, in 1903 he worked on
book illustrations of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Other known
books he illustrated were The Wind In The Willows and Alice In Wonderland.
Arthur Rackham's contribution to fairies came to us in an illustration
he called "Leaves."
Edmund Dulac was
one of the most impressive of the early 20th century artists. He
was best known for his illustrations in Fairy Book, Arabian Night,
Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella. His work covers a wide range
of scenes with his beautiful backgrounds and colorings. He was born
in 1882 in Toulouse, France. He favored working in watercolors.
Margaret
W Tarrant born in London 1888, enjoyed a 50 year career and
died in 1959. She designed and created cards, calendars and illustrated
children's books including Peter's Friends and All Things Bright
and Beautiful. She became a book illustrator at 20 years old.
