Castles
(cass-ells) A fortified residence built for Kings, Queens
and noblemen in feudal times. Castles were fortified in thick
stone and would protect those who resided within. Its hard shell
and many guards made it virtually impossible to penetrate. Most
attempts on castles would be futile.
Castles
were enormous in size, often having as many as 100 rooms. These
rooms were used for dining, ballroom dancing and entertainment.
Some were chapels. Others were simply sleeping quarters. Some
castles even had their own prisons, where prisoners could be kept
hidden from the public eye who were dealt with in secrecy.
Castles
were normally built on high ground or on mountain tops. The reason
for this was so that the castle could be guarded better. Being
high up would give the many guard the ability to see far and wide.
A surprise attack could not be perpetrated with much success.
Castles
were also a breeding ground for soldiers and workers. Men who
were sold as slaves were used as servants, builders or cooks,
while stronger ones were trained to be warriors to fight against
enemies. These solders were the front line of all battles. Their
lives meant nothing to those who purchased them.
