The History of Mythology
 Mythology
originated in ancient Greece. There the great paradoxes of history
were set to the first advance of European civilizations. The development
of the first cities took place in a remote island to the south of
the Aegean Sea. While the glittering knights of central Europe wasted
their energy in war, a highly cultured yet peaceful society was
being built on trade and agricultural surplus.
The history of Greece
can be traced back to Stone Age. Then came early farmers and the
civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. It was followed
by a time of devastating wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages.
In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city
states, each of which consisted of a city and surrounding countryside.
From
this ancient time comes the gods they
worshipped. Some of the gods include:
- Chaos - in
ancient Greek myth of creation all things came into existence
though him. Chaos generated the solid mass of Earth, from which
created a cloud filled Heaven.
- Zeus - the
god who had the power over all. He was to be the supreme ruler
of the heavens.
- Hades - lord
of the underworld. He ruled over the dead. He was a greedy god
who was greatly concerned with increasing his numbers. He saw
those who increased the number of dead favorably. He was also
the god of wealth
- Eros - the
god of love thought to be a handsome and intense young man
- Pontus - the
god of the sea
